Float: The Reusable Cup Revolutionizing Bubble Tea Drinking

A Sustainable Solution for Bubble Tea Lovers

Float stands out from other reusable cups with its innovative design. The inner cup of Float positions the bubbles above the drink, allowing the tea and bubbles to reach the mouth simultaneously as the user raises their head to drink. This clever design not only enhances the drinking experience but also solves the issue of straw cups often leaving the bottom part of the drink uncooled by the ice pieces floating on top.

The realization of Float involved the use of plastic injection molding and silicone injection molding techniques. The cup's dimensions measure 106mm x 106mm x 236mm, providing a comfortable and practical size for bubble tea lovers on the go.

Float's creation was driven by the alarming amount of waste generated by disposable bubble tea cups and straws. Fang Shih and Tian-Yu Wu aimed to create a superior experience compared to single-use straw cups, encouraging people to opt for reusable cups and significantly reducing the number of disposable plastic cups and straws used.

The design process for Float spanned from November 2018 to December 2019. During this time, extensive research was conducted to understand the underlying issues surrounding the use of reusable cups. Surveys, interviews, and mind-mapping exercises revealed that the difficulty in cleaning and carrying reusable straws often discouraged their use. Float was conceived as a solution to these challenges.

Overcoming creative and technical obstacles was a crucial part of developing Float. The designers focused on achieving optimal user experience by fine-tuning details such as the caliber of the rim and the slope of the inner cup. Countless adjustments were made to ensure the cup provided the best possible drinking experience.

Float's unique design and commitment to sustainability have garnered recognition in the design community. The cup was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Float's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
